Bilal Shah, a Master's student in Geological Engineering at Universitas Padjadjaran, is one of the recipients of the Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship (KNB) from Pakistan

Bilal Shah, is a Master’s student in Geological Engineering from the 2024 intake and an awardee of the KNB Scholarship. Before receiving the KNB Scholarship, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Malakand, Pakistan, graduating in November 2021. Shortly after, he joined an engineering consultancy firm in Haripur for an internship, where he gained hands-on experience in geological and engineering projects. This role, which he continued until the end of 2022, strengthened his technical skills and deepened his interest in advancing his studies in geology.

Bilal’s decision to pursue a master’s degree in Indonesia was driven by the country’s strong academic reputation and the competitive quality of education it offers. Among several scholarship opportunities he received, the Faculty of Geological Engineering (FTG) stood out for its well-equipped geotechnical laboratory, outstanding academic staff, and rich research environment. Now focusing his studies on geotechnical research, he greatly values the advanced facilities, fieldwork opportunities, and dedicated mentorship that make FTG the ideal place for his academic journey.

The KNB Scholarship holds immense significance for Bilal, as it turned his dream of studying abroad into reality. It has covered his tuition fees, visa extensions, and monthly living allowance—support that would have otherwise been beyond his reach. More than just financial assistance, it has also given him the chance to connect with fellow international students, expanding his cultural horizons and enriching his overall experience in Indonesia.
Specializing in slope stability—a critical concern in many parts of Pakistan—Bilal plans to apply his knowledge to assess risks and develop effective early warning and mitigation strategies for landslides and related geohazards. He hopes to collaborate with local universities, government agencies, and engineering firms to share methodologies and build stronger capacity for hazard prevention in his home country.

Programs like the KNB Scholarship play a vital role in fostering international collaboration in geology and science. By bringing together students, researchers, and professionals from diverse backgrounds, they encourage the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and methodologies. Such connections pave the way for joint research projects, global conferences, and long-term partnerships that continue well beyond graduation.

To prospective applicants, Bilal encourages viewing the KNB Scholarship as more than just financial support—it is a transformative experience that expands academic expertise, builds lifelong international friendships, and deepens cultural understanding. With commitment to both academic excellence and personal growth, this opportunity can open doors you may have never imagined.

Bilal said, “I remain deeply grateful to the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of Indonesia and the Government of Indonesia for offering such a prestigious scholarship to students worldwide. Their generosity has not only shaped my academic path but also created life-changing opportunities for many others. No matter how much I express my gratitude, it will never be enough to truly capture my appreciation for their support.”
